Vikings Race Past Mitchell 17-1

NEW LONDON, Conn. -- Lake Fleming tied a career-high with six goals and added an assist as Salem State (1-1) earned their first victory of the 2023 season, 17-1 over Mitchell on a wet and snowy afternoon on Saturday. Sean Roach Jr. and Dakota Girard combined for seven goals and a pair of assists as the Vikings raced out to a 9-0 halftime lead. Weston Schumacher broke the shutout at 7:01 of the fourth for the Mariners, who remain winless on the year (0-4). 

The Vikings dominated the opening quarter, outshooting Mitchell 10-2 as a pair of scores by Roach Jr. and unassisted goals by Aidan Hollingsworth and Fleming gave Salem State an early 4-0 lead. Fleming notched a hat-trick alone in the second quarter and a man-up goal by Liam Bernardi and goal by Girard pushed the advantage to 9-0 at the break. Fleming and Girard each had a pair of scores in the third quarter as the lead grew to 14-0. Roach added his fourth goal of the game early in the final period and additional goals by Hollingsworth and Aristomenis Koumentakos made the final 17-1.

Trevor Gilligan earned his first career win in net making eight saves, while Ethan Wheeler made eight saves in the loss for Mitchell.

Roach Jr. led the Vikings with seven groundballs while Kevin Paratore led the defense with four caused turnovers.
