Albertus Magnus Spoils Salem State's Season Opener

NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Lake Fleming scored three goals, but Albertus Magnus came away with an 11-6 victory over Salem Salem in the season opener for both squads on Friday evening. The Vikings were limited to just eight first half shots and trailed 5-1 at the half. Derek Ralston and Kader Price paced the Falcons with a combined seven goals and an assist.

Ralston and Zaheim Wilkins gave Albertus Magnus a 2-0 first quarter lead. Fleming got one back for Salem State at the 10:02 mark of the second, but three scores in the period by the Falcons, gave the home team a comfortable, four-goal advantage at halftime.

Fleming scored consecutive man-up goals to start the third, drawing Salem State to within two. However, Matthew Hutchings and Price closed the third with back-to-back goals for Albertus Magnus. Trailing, 8-3 in the fourth, the Vikings attempted to comeback, scoring three straight times, including a pair of scores by Sean Roach Jr. With less than four minutes remaining and the lead cut to 8-6, Price and Ralston closed the game with three straight scores to deny the comeback attempt by the Vikings.

Dane Walsh earned the win, making 11 stops for the Falcons. Trevor Gilligan made nine saves in his first start for the Vikings. Albertus Magnus held a 39-31 advantage in shots and edged the Vikings in groundballs, 36-35.
