Salem State Routs Worcester State 9-3
SALEM, Mass. -- Henry Wilson, Luke Day, Ryan Barrett and Seamus Cummings all tallied two scores apiece as Salem State raced past Worcester State, 9-3 in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) win on Thursday evening at Rockett Arena. The Vikings go to 10-5 and 6-3 in the MASCAC while the Lancers slide to 6-8-1 and 3-5-1.
How it Happened:
- Wilson redirected a shot by Davis Kinne for a power play goal 1:21 into the first period.
- Day made it 2-0 with his first shorthanded goal of the season at 14:47 of the opening period.
- Worcester State's Brady Carpenter got behind the Salem State defense and cut the deficit to 2-1 with less than four minutes left in the first.
- However, Day redirected Kinne's attempt from the slot with less than a minute remaining, giving the Vikings a 3-1 lead at the first intermission.
- Cummings quickly made the score 5-1 in favor of the Vikings with back-to-back scores in the first 2:10 of the second period.
- Just over thirty seconds later, Wilson added his second goal of the game, beating goalie Jakub Kubik as Salem State opened the second period with three unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead.
- Barrett ripped a shot from the face-off circle, connecting for the Vikings' seventh goal of the game at 11:52 of the second.
- Matthew Kowal broke the scoring drought for the Lancers as his shot beat goalie Will Nepveu near side, clipping the crossbar to make the game 7-2.
- Carson James made it 8-2 with Salem State's fifth goal of the second period as the Vikings took a commanding six-goal lead into the the third period.
- Christian Phinney put home a rebound for Worcester State with less than seven minutes remaining in the third, making it a five-goal game.
- Barrett added his second goal of the game, converting Salem State's second power play goal of the game at 16:59 of the third.
Inside the Numbers:
- Will Nepveu (9-4) made 37 saves in the win.
- Jakub Kubik (2-5-1) allowed five goals and made 12 stops in just over a period before being replaced by Donovan Alfama, who allowed four goals to go with 21 saves.
- Salem State's nine goals were the most since the Vikings tallied nine in a victory against Framingham State in December of 2017.
- The Vikings 16 assists and 25 points were the most since a win over Worcester State in February of 2019 when they totaled 15 assists and 23 points.
- Declan Loughnane, Kinne, Keagan O'Donoghue and James Tatro all had two assists for Salem State.
