Southern Maine Puts Away Salem State 7-2

GORHAM, Maine -- A four-goal third period spurred Southern Maine to a 7-2 win over Salem State on Tuesday evening in a non-conference tilt for the Vikings. Seven different players scored for the Huskies, who improve to 3-4 on the year. The Vikings are now 3-3-1.

Southern Maine grabbed a quick 2-0 lead early in the first as Mathieu Sabourin and Nolan McElhaney scored just over a minute apart, giving the Huskies a two-goal lead with 10:58 remaining in the first. Salem State's Landyn Greatorex added his fourth goal of the season to cut the deficit to 2-1 before Erik Larsson also notched his fourth of the year, tying the game with 2:30 left in the first. The Huskies held a 14-10 advantage in shots in the first period.

Jakub Suran scored the only goal of the second to regain the lead for Southern Maine. The Huskies limited Salem State to just eight shots on goal, allowing Southern Maine to exit the period with a 3-2 lead.

The Huskies broke open the game in the third, scoring four unanswered goals in a span of 4:35 to put the game away. Conor Donovan scored the first goal before Austin Marini made it a 5-2 game at the 5:32 mark. Azam Jiwa netted a goal at 6:16 and Cole Brennan became the seventh Southern Maine player to score a goal when he beat goalie Dean Hahn, who had replaced starter Will Nepveu.

Kyle Penton made 24 saves in the win for the Huskies, which outshtot Salem State 42-26, including 15-8 in the third. Nepveu made 30 saves before being relieved by Hahn in the third. Hahn stopped 5-of-6 attempts.
