WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Westfield State used three second period goals to skate to a 4-1 MASCAC win over Salem State on Thursday evening. The Owls jump to 3-2 on the season and are 1-1 in conference. The Vikings are still searching for their first win (0-4, 0-3).
Salem State held a 10-5 advantage in shots in a scoreless first period. Erik Larsson then put the visitors on top with a shorthanded goal at 4:08 of the second. However, Westfield State responded with three goals over the next 3:20 minutes to take a comfortable 3-1 lead. Brett Williams tied the game at 10:52 before a power-play goal by Ryan O'Halloran put the Owls on top, 2-1. Just over a minute later, Gianluca Marini made it a 3-1 game as the Owls outshot the Vikings 21-11 in the period.
Cooper Board added Westfield State's fourth unanswered goal on the power-play at 7:28 of the third. Goalie Valtteri Valtonen did the rest, stopping 27-of-28 shots to earn his third win of the season (3-2). Hunter Thomas (0-2) stopped 33 shots for Salem State, which ended the game being outshot 37-28.
