Vikings Post 4-1 Victory Over Corsairs

NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - Led by 41 saves from Aaron Mercer, Salem State defeated the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, 4-1 on Tuesday evening at Hetland Arena. Four different goal scorers helped the Vikings win for the third time in four games. Salem State is now 6-9 and 4-7 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Corairs go to 8-7-1 and 5-4-1 in the league. 

Luke Day made it 1-0 in favor of the Vikings at the 4:46 mark of the first period, converting a power-play goal for Salem State. Griffin Wiencek drew UMass Dartmouth even at 12:23 of the first as the game remained tied heading into the second period. 

Salem State then scored three unanswered goals to put the game away. Connor Woolley broke the stalemate 5:16 into the second period before Joe Smith made the score 3-1 at 12:02 of the period with his seventh goal of the season.  

Leading 3-1 in the third, Billy McGwin iced the game with a late goal, making the final 4-1. Mercer stopped 38 shots over the final two periods to pick up his second win of the season (2-4). Parker Butler (2-5) made 15 saves in the loss.
