Plymouth State Skates Past Salem State

SALEM, Mass. – Peter Laviolette (Longboat Key, Fla.) scored a goal and added an assist as Plymouth State skated to a 6-3 victory over Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest at Rockett Arena on Thursday evening. The Panthers go to 10-4-2 on the season and 7-1-2 in conference while the Vikings slip to 5-9 and 3-7 in conference.

Plymouth State tallied three first period goals in building a 3-1 advantage. Matt Tartaglio (Houston, Texas) wristed a shot just inside the right post to give Plymouth State a 1-0 lead at the 6:37 mark. Myles Abbate's (Norwell, Mass.) shot from just outside the right face-off circle found the back of the net with less than 40 seconds coming off the clock. Later, Peter Laviolette (Longboat Key, Fla.) took a pass at center ice and knifed through two defenders, before scoring the Panther's third goal of the period. A turnover by Plymouth State in their own zone led to Salem State's first score as Keagan O'Donoghue (Frisco, Texas,) beat goalie Brendahn Brawley (Morton, Pa.) off a feed from Erik Larsson (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) with just over three minutes left in the period.

The second period saw Salem State cut the deficit to one goal as Larsson created a turnover in the neutral zone, leading to a shorthanded goal by Joe Smith (Holbrook, Mass.) midway through the second period.

Plymouth State scored three unanswered goals in the third to pull away for the victory. Ben Chipman (North Vancouver, British Columbia) added an insurance goal for the Panthers as his shot beat goalie Aaron Mercer (Corner Brook, Newfoundland) glove-side for a 4-2 lead at 7:16 of the third. Grant DeWitt (Bowling Green, Ohio) went top-shelf for a shorthanded goal, giving the Panthers a two-goal advantage before Jovan Zimmerman (Boulder, Colo.) slipped a shot through the legs of Mercer to cap the scoring late in the period.

Brawly (4-2-1) made 23 saves in picking up his second win of the season, while Mercer (1-2) stopped 36 shots in the loss. The Panthers outshot Salem State 42-25 for the game.
