Salem State Holds Off Connecticut College 3-1, Teammate Billy Hickey '21 Honored

SALEM, Mass. -- Erik Larsson (Lake Tahoe, Calif.) scored twice and Joona Sato-Hunsula (Turku, Findland) made 31 saves as Salem State stopped Connecticut College 3-1 on Tuesday evening at Rockett Arena in a non-conference matchup. The Vikings improve to 3-7 while the Camels slip to 1-4.

Salem State and the Vikings' hockey team honored teammate Billy Hickey, who passed away last spring, with the presentation of his degree to his family by Salem State President John D. Keenan before the game. Connecticut College's Colin McCabe (Pembroke, Mass.) and Salem state's Landon Hasenfuss (Hanover, Mass.) participated in a ceremonial puck drop.

Eamonn Miller (Victoria, British Columbia) scored the first goal on a one-timer just 1:04 into the game. Later, Salem State was assessed a five minute major, but the Vikings killed off the penalty and survived a shot by Kyle Shero (Westwood, Mass.) that rang of the post with a minute left in the opening period.

Salem State added a power play goal in the second, with Larsson giving Salem State a 2-0 lead at the 5:03 mark. Will Winship (Andover, Mass.) had a chance to tie the game for Connecticut College as the freshman forward rifled a shot uncontested from point-blank range, but he was denied by Sato-Hunsula.

Anthony Quatieri (Peabody, Mass.) scored on the power play for the Camels 3:07 into the third, cutting the deficit to one goal. Jake Hughes (Charlton, Mass.) appeared to tie the game for Connecticut College with just over five minutes remaining, but Sato-Hunsula made an acrobatic stop, preventing the puck from reaching the net to preserve the one-goal lead.

Larsson iced the game for the Vikings with less than a minute remaining, catching the Camels' goalie heading to the bench for an extra-attacker. Salem State held on for the win despite being outshot 32-23 for the game.

Mike McHale (Needham, Mass.) made 20 saves in net for Connecticut College.
