Corsairs Edge Vikings 4-3

SALEM, Mass. -- Michael Mania (Bayville, N.J.) tallied two second period goals to highlight a three-goal second period as UMass Dartmouth held on for a 4-3 victory over Salem State in a Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) contest at Rockett Arena on Saturday afternoon. The Corsairs go to 5-3 on the season and 3-2 in conference. The Vikings slip to 1-4 and 1-3 in the MASCAC.

Keagan O'Donoghue (Frisco, Texas) gave Salem State an early 1-0 lead, putting home a rebound on a power play in the first period. Kai Kapossy (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) tied the game late in the opening frame, deflecting a shot past goalie Joona Sato-Hunsula (Turku, Finland).

Salem State held a 15-7 advantage in shots in the first before the Corsairs flipped the script in the second period, scoring three consecutive goals to take a 4-2 lead into the third. Kapossy ripped an uncontested slapshot for the first goal before Mania put back consecutive rebounds, the first off a turnover, staking UMass Dartmouth to a 4-1 lead. Joe Smith (Holbrook, Mass.) cut the deficit in half, putting home a deflection at the 18 minute mark of the second. The Corsairs held a 16-7 advantage in shots.

Smith drew the Vikings to within a goal, finding a loose puck in the crease nearly halfway through the third as the lead was cut to 4-3. The Corsairs appeared to pad their advantage, but the goal was waved off, and UMass Dartmouth survived two late power play opportunities by Salem State to pull out the victory.

Daniel Davidson (Surrey, B.C.) made 25 saves in the win. Sato-Hunsula stopped 24 for the Vikings.
