Salem State in Second Place After First Day of the MASCAC Men's Golf Championship
PEABODY Mass. -- Springfield surged into the lead after day one of the 2023 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Men's Golf Championship as The Meadow at Peabody. The Pride shot 302 (+14) for the round and lead back-to-back-champion Salem State, which shot 313 (+25). MCLA 320 (+32), Worcester State 337 (+49), and Westfield State 376 (+88) round out the field.
 
MCLA's Mat Gover (Atkinson, N.H.) topped the leaderboard on day one, shooting a 71 (-1) with three birdies. Salem State's Ethan Doyle (Salem, Mass.) , who had an eagle on 18 and Springfield's Nick DeMaio (West Springfield, Mass.), who had four birdies are tied for second, finishing even after day one to trail by one stroke.
 
The Pride (+3) led Salem State by one stroke through the first nine.
 
Gover and Springfield's Jack Diefenderfer(East Longmeadow, Mass.) tied for the early lead, shooting +1 before entering the back nine.
 
The Pride's David Girourd (Chicopee, Mass.) ended the day in third place, with a 75 (+3) while Justin Acquarulo of Springfield was fourth with a 77 (+5).
 
Head coach Jimmy O'Reilly on his team's performance today, "Today we didn't have our best stuff, but we battled and we played hard. Other than fifteen we played a pretty good round of golf. What we have to do tomorrow is we are going to have to play our best round of the year and we have to play mistake free golf."
 
"Springfield played a flawless round of golf today. Tomorrow if we control our situation and do what we do best, and that's play our style of golf I like our chances."
