Cannata, Vikings Lead After Day One of MASCAC Championship

Salem State leads after the first day of the 2022 MASCAC Men's Golf Championship being held at Shennecossett Golf Course in Groton, Conn. The defending conference champions lead Springfield College (315) by six stokes after compiling a 309 team score. Westfield State is currently in third place with a score of 323.

Senior Brian Cannata sits atop the leaderboard after turing in a 72 (+1), three strokes ahead of Westfield State's Brandon Smith (75, +4). The Vikings' Danny DiLisio and Ryan O'Leary are tied for fifth with an opening round 78.

Head Coach Jimmy O'Reilly was pleased with his team's performance. "I am very proud of our effort today. It was cold and the wind was blowing at 30 MPH. Our guys hung tough and battled through. Brian Cannata played an incredible round of golf. He made a great birdie on 18 that gave us the extra shot cushion heading into tomorrow.

Danny DiLisio and Ryan O'Leary played extremely well. Danny continues his stellar play this fall. He really has played some great golf for us. Ryan stepped up huge for us today. He really struck the ball well and made some huge putts down the stretch. Ethan Doyle didn't have his best stuff today but he grinded so hard like he always does to post an 81. Pretty safe bet he will be in peak form tomorrow. That's how Ethan has always been. He is so tough mentally.

We are in a good spot and we are where we want to be heading into tomorrow. We can only control how we play. Nothing else. We have a great game plan for this golf course. We we will go out and try play our best and in the end we hope it's enough."

The championship, hosted by Mitchell College, is a two-day, 36-hole stroke play tournament. There are eight teams competing- Eastern Nazarene College, MCLA, Mitchell College, New England College, Salem State University, Springfield College, Westfield State University and Worcester State University. The day-two pairings will begin at 9 am tomorrow.
