Athlete Spotlight: Nick Martinez
SALEM, Mass. -- This week's athlete spotlight features men's basketball player Nick Martinez (So., G, Revere, Mass.), who was recently named the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Player of the Week after after leading the Vikingsto a 2-1 record, averaging 22 points per game on 48.2% shooting (27-56 FG), along with four rebounds, 2.3 assists and two steals. Erupted for a career-high 34 points on 65.2% shooting (15-23 FG) with four rebounds, two blocks, two assists and a steal in the 86-74 victory over Rivier. He then helped the Vikings secure their second win of the week with 13 points, seven rebounds, and four assists in a 76-70 comeback win over Southern Maine.
Can you talk about your performance this past week that led to your player of the week award?
I scored 34 points against Rivier I was able to do what I needed to do to help the team win. My teammates put me in a position where I could make plays.
Are there any short-term goals you'd like to accomplish this season?
No. Just long-term of winning the league.
Which strengths do you believe you have that make you a great athlete?
My quickness and the confidence I have in myself.
Is there a coach/athlete or someone outside of sports that you look up to as a role model?
My mom.
What's the best piece of advice you've gained from your coaches?
I don't have the best advice. I've received a lot of good advice that has helped me.
How would your coaches and teammates describe you?
A good teammate, willing to learn and who wants to win.
