Southern Maine Shuts Out Salem State 2-0

GORHAM, Maine  –  Senior Dorina Sirois (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) scored a pair of second quarter goals, and sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Pych (West Milford, N.J./Morristown-Beard) made several key saves to lead the University of Southern Maine Huskies to a 2-0 win over the Salem State University Vikings in a Little East Conference field hockey game Tuesday night at Hannaford Field. With the win, Southern Maine improves to 5-6 overall and 3-1 in the Little East Conference.  The Vikings dip to 6-4 overall and 2-3 in conference play.  

After a scoreless first quarter, Sirois found the back of the net twice in the second for her team leading sixth and seventh goals of the season.  Sirois' first goal came just over 90 seconds into the second frame when senior Maggie Redman (Alfred, Maine/Massabesic) hit a perfectly time ball across the face of the goal to Sirois on the far side for a 1-0 USM lead in the 17th minute. 

Sirois doubled the USM lead in the 22nd minute rocketing in a shot off of a forward pass from sophomore Mikayla Bourassa (West Gardiner, Maine/Gardiner).  The assist is Bourassa's third of the season.  

USM pressured for a third goal in a dominant third quarter outshooting the Vikings 6-0 in the period, but Salem State goalkeeper sophomore Kelli McCarthy (Foxborough, Mass.) was up to the task to keep the score 1-0. 

In the fourth, Salem State created several chances, and nearly drew within a goal of the Huskies early in the quarter when senior Katherine Crane's (Arlington, Mass.) shot on goal was snuffed out of mid-air by the stick of USM's Pych preserving the shut out. 

Pych made five saves in the win, earning her third shut out victory of the season and the fourth of her career.  Pych has an outstanding .833 save percentage through 11 games this season and is allowing 1.31 goals per game.  Salem's McCarthy made seven saves in the loss, and several strong defensive plays.
