Mass Maritime Takes Two From Salem State

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Mass Maritime took a pair of games from Salem State at Hendy Field in a MASCAC doubleheader on Saturday. The Buccaneers won the first game, 5-2 before coming back to win the second game, 8-7. Mass Maritime is now 17-13 and 8-4 in the MASCAC while Salem State goes to 11-12 and 6-6 in the conference.    

How It Happened:

Game 1

Hunter Dean pitched a complete game for Mass Maritime in game one, allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Brett Velzis added a home run in two trips to the plate with a run, RBI and walk.

Salem State's Cam Fisher went the distance, giving up five runs on seven hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Jake Boucher went 2-for-4 with a walk.

  • Owen Duggan's sacrifice fly made it 1-0 in favor of the Vikings in the first.
  • Michael Buccaro added another sac fly in the third to make it 2-0.
  • Velis hit a home run in the fourth to put Mass Maritime on the board.
  • AJ Pietrafesa and Colsen Loughren put the Buccaneers in front, 3-2 with RBI singles in the fifth.
  • Aaron Cole added an insurance run in the sixth on a bases loaded walk.  

 Game 2

Sam Huffman started for Mass Maritime in game two, pitching 5.0 innings and allowing seven runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Sam Wooley eaned the win in relief despite three walks to go with a strikeout. Velzis went 2-for-4 with a home run, double, run, and four RBI. Colsen Loughren added a pinch-hit two-run home run.

Nick Bamforth went 5.0 innings for the Vikings, allowing five runs on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Anthony Butkevicius took the loss in 0.1 innings of work, giving up three runs on three hits with a walk and strikeout. Boucher and Yabdriel Gonzalez each went 2-for-4 and combined for two runs and three RBI.

  • Velzis's double in the first put Mass Maritime up 1-0 in the first. 
  • A Dylan Adamson double to right center evened the game at a run apiece in the second.
  • The Vikings scored six runs in the third to take a 7-1 lead. Gonzalez and Connor Dolan each had two-run singles in the inning.
  • Velzis connected for a three-run home run in the third, drawing the Buccaneers to within 7-4.
  • Trailing, 7-5 in the sixth, Loughren tied the game at 7-all with a two-run homer before Pietrafes brought in the eventual game-winning run with a fielder's choice. 

 Salem State travels to Framingham State on Monday for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
