Salem State Earns Split With Fitchburg State

SALEM, Mass. -- Owen Corcoran pitched 4.0 innings of scoreless relief as Fitchburg State took game one, 11-1 of a scheduled MASCAC doubleheader on Friday at The Central Campus Baseball Field on Friday. Nick Bamforth earned the win in game two for Salem State as he allowed only two runs on six hits in 4.2 innings in a 3-2 victory. The Vikings are now 5-8 and 2-1 in the MASCAC while the Falcons go to 5-8 and 1-2 in conference.
Game 1
Cam Fisher started for Salem State and lasted 2.0 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits with a strikeout. Connor Dolan went 2-for-3 with a triple and run. Owen Duggan collected a pair of hits.
Corcoran allowed three hits with a walk and two strikeouts for Fitchburg State. Matthew Kelly went 4-for-5 with three RBI and Maxwell Kelly was 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI. Shane Daly went 3.0 innings for Fitchburg State, allowing just a run on four hits with three strikeouts.
How It Happened
- The Falcons scored two runs in the first on four hits. Nolan Hills laced a single to left to score Joseph Abt from third with the game's first run. Adam Koza followed with a sacrifice fly, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
- Matthew Kelly added and RBI single to right to extend the Fitchburg State lead to 3-0 in the second.
- The Falcons opened the game with a six-run third. Maxwell Kelly's two-run single to right started the scoring before Matthew Kelly added the third run with a single to right. A sacrifice fly and base hit by Abt made it 9-0.
- Connor Dolan led off the bottom of the third with a triple to right center and came home on an RBI groundout by Jake Boucher.
- Matthew Kelly and pinch-hitter Joseph DiCrosta added RBI singles in the seventh to make the score 11-1 in favor of the Falcons.
Game 2
Yabdriel Gonzalez was 3-for-3 with a run for the Vikings in game two. Brandon McMahon earned the save with 2.0 shutout innings, giving up just two hits.
Matthew Kelly and Jacob Hurrell each went 2-for-4 with a run for Fitchburg State. Starter Joseph Hartnett took the loss, allowing three runs on six hits in 3.1 innings with five walks and three strikeouts.
How It Happened
- Salem State scored all three runs in the fourth on an RBI double to left center by Ryan Bourgeois and RBI singles from Dolan and Nolan Currier.
- The Falcons plated two in the fifth as Abt laced a two-run single to left to score Jacob Hurrell and Matthew Kelly.
- Matthew Smith reached first on a one-out error in the top of the seventh, but McMahon got the final two outs to record his first save of the year.
