Salem State Rallies Past Fitchburg State

RINDGE, NH -- Connor Dolan's two-out RBI single in the top of the 10th drove in Ethan Supplettis with the game-winning run as Salem State came from behind to defeat Fitchburg State, 13-12 in the MASCAC opener for both clubs at Pappas Field on Thursday night. Jake Boucher picked up the win, throwing 2.0 innings while allowing two runs on two hits with a pair of walks and strikeouts. The Vikings improve to 4-7 overall and 1-0 in conference. The Falcons are now 4-7 and 0-1.

Supplettis went 3-for 5 with three runs for Salem State. Brayden Michaelson had two hits including a double while Dolan was 2-for-5 with a home run and two RBI. Neither starter figured in the decision. Nolan Currier went 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts.     

Adam Koza was 3-for-5 with three RBI for Fitchburg State while Cole DuHaime went 3-for-6 with three doubles and three RBI. Joseph Stawski took the mound for Fitchburg State and lasted 4.1 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with three walks and a pair of strikeouts. Demetrius Sampalis was charged with the loss, going 1.2 innings and allowing five runs - four earned - on four hits with three walks.

How It Happened

  • DuHaime gave Fitchburg State a 1-0 lead with an RBI double in the second.
  • Ryan Bourgeois tied the game with a single to left in the fourth.
  • Michaelson and Supplettis hit back-to-back singles in the fifth, giving Salem State their first lead, 3-1.
  • However,  Koza answered in the bottom of the inning with a two-run single to center to tie the game. 
  • Dolan hit his first home run of the year in the sixth before a passed ball and RBI double by Michaelson put the Vikings on top 6-3. 
  • Once again, the Falcons answered with a three-run sixth, as an error and singles by Joseph Abt and Koza tied the game again.  
  • Matthew Kelly put Fitchburg State back in the lead in the seventh with an RBI double.
  • A balk and RBI groundout put Salem State ahead, but once again, Fitchburg State answered with a three-run eighth. DuHaime's second double brought home two runs before Maxwell Kelly's sacrifice fly made it a 10-8 game.   
  • Salem State responded scoring four runs in the top of the ninth Trailing 10-8, Boucher's one-out single with the bases loaded drove in two, tying the game before a fielder's choice and sacrifice fly by Nolan Currier gave the Vikings a 12-10 lead.
  • DuHaime led off the bottom of the 10th with another double, but was stranded at third as Boucher recorded the last out on a flyout to left.

Salem State will host the Falcons in a doubleheader tomorrow, March 28 at 12:30 pm at The Central Campus Baseball Field.
