Fisher and Gummow Headline 2024 All-MASCAC Baseball Awards
SALEM, Mass. – Cam Fisher (Burlington, Conn.) and head coach Andrew Gummow headlined the 2024 Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Baseball All-Conference Awards as they notched Rookie and Coach of the Year accolades. Fisher was also named to the All-MASCAC second team along with teammates Mark Smith (East Haven, Conn.) and Brock Pare (Lowell, Mass.) as announced by the league on Wednesday afternoon.
Head coach Andrew Gummow, in his second year, guided the Vikings to a 23-15 overall record and a 14-7 conference record, notching the program's second 20-plus win season in the past five years. His team also secured the top seed in the MASCAC Tournament after sweeping MCLA on the final weekend of the regular season which solidified Salem's spot as host of the MASCAC Championship for the first time since 2016.
On the mound, Fisher appeared in nine games for the Vikings while recording an impressive 6-1 record in his rookie campaign. The freshman posted a 2.16 ERA with 50.0 innings pitched, allowing 50 hits, nine walks, and 29 strikeouts, finishing in the top-five in the league in earned run average (2nd) and wins (4th).
Pare had his best season in the orange in blue, pitching 60 innings with a 2.55 ERA, allowing 42 hits, 26 walks, and a career-best 57 strikeouts to amount five wins in 10 appearances. The graduate student's 57 strikeouts placed him fifth in the MASCAC while his five wins put him in a three-way tie for fifth most in the league.
Graduate student, Smith, left his mark in his sole season for the Vikings. The Connecticut native co-lead in hits for the Vikings with 45, while batting .310 in 38 starts. The center fielder also led the team in stolen bases (33), runs (42), and home runs (4) while adding a second-best four triples on the season. Smith's 33 stolen bases set a new single season record for the Vikings and placed him at the top of the MASCAC.
