Eastern Connecticut Defeats Salem State 16-7

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. -- Eastern Connecticut scored five first inning runs to easily cruise past Salem State, 16-7 in the final game of the Vikings spring trek to Myrtle Beach, S.C. at The Ripken Experience. The Warriors go to 9-1 on the year, while Salem State concludes their trip 2-6. Emmanuel Zaiter and Hank Penders each went 2-for-4 for the Warriors, which included a pair of home runs and six combined RBI. Owen Duggan and EJ Field each collected three hits for the Vikings, who managed 12 hits on the day.

A two-run double and RBI single by Hank Penders gave Eastern Connecticut an early 5-0 lead. Ray Leonzi made it 6-0 in the top of the second with a base hit before Salem State responded with a run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI groundout by Conor Dolan. Zaiter's solo home run made it 7-1 in the third before Penders added a two-run shot in the seventh that made the score 11-2. 

The Warriors added four runs each in the seventh and eighth innings with a two-run double by Mason Balmer putting Eastern Connecticut ahead 14-4. Dolan, who had four RBI in the game, added a three-run home run in the bottom of the ninth for Salem State to close the scoring. 

Dan Driscoll earned the win, going 6.0 innings and allowing two earned runs on six hits with a pair of walks and seven strikeouts. Brock Pare took the loss for the Vikings after giving up seven runs on seven hits with six walks.
