Babson Takes Two From Salem State

SALEM, Mass. -- Babson used a four-run seventh inning to come-from-behind to defeat Salem State 9-6 in game one of their scheduled doubleheader on Saturday at the Central Campus Baseball Field. Sean Burychka hit a one-out double and two batters later, Michael Cook broke the tie with a two-run single as the Beavers held on for the win. Game two, saw Babson's starting pitcher Tim Noone keep the Salem State bats in check as he allowed just three hits and no runs in six innings of work with eight strikeouts to lead Babson to a 7-1 victory in game two. The Beavers go to 9-4 on the season while the Vikings now stand at 8-6.

Game One 

Salem State raced out to a 3-1 first inning lead. Zach Briana drove in the first run with an single to left and Zach Piroh followed with a two-run double. The Vikings plated three more runs in the third on a Jack Sefrino two-run double before Bobby Jellison tacked on a third run, driving in Sefrino with a single to center. Trailing 6-1 in the fifth, the Beavers scored three runs to draw to within 6-4. Jack Pirkl doubled in two runs before a double-play scored Pirkl. Starting pitcher Anthony St. John lasted 2.1 innings, giving up nine hits and six runs - five earned with two strikeouts. Truman Devitt earned the win with an inning of scoreless relief. Stephen McLendon struck out all three batters in the ninth to earn the win. Brock Pare began the game for the Vikings, going 6.1 innings and allowed six runs on six hits with three walks and a strikeout. Greg Gentile took the loss, giving up three earned runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work.

Briana and Derek Angell had two hits apiece and combined for four runs scored. Piroh collected two doubles and had two RBI for the Vikings. Thomas Lapham went 3-for-5 with two runs and Burychka finished 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI for Babson.

Game Two

Noone was the story in game two, as Salem State's offense was kept off the scoreboard over the first six innings. Babson scored two runs in the third highlighted by a triple from Burychka. The Beavers added five runs in the fourth to take a 7-0 lead. Lapham and Josh Yellen had RBI singles in the inning, and Michael Cook added a two-run home run. The Vikings scored their lone run on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Derek Angell in the seventh. Griffin Cofsky pitched three innings allowing one run on five hits with three strikeouts to earn the save.

Sefrino started for Salem State and allowed 10 hits and seven runs with two strikeouts in the loss as the Vikings used six pitchers in the game. Lapham and Yellen each went 3-for-5 and combined for three runs and three RBI for Babson. Jake Boucher and Bobby Jellison both went 2-for-4  for Salem State.
