Salem State Wallops Owls 18-1

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Brendan Greene (Winchester, Mass.) went 4-for-5 with a pair of runs and six RBI and Andrew McLaughlin (Peabody, Mass.) won his league-tying fifth game as Salem State racked up 14 hits in an 18-1 victory over Westfield State on Friday afternoon. The Vikings even their record at 11-11 and 5-5 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference, while the Owls slip to 14-8 and 7-3 in conference.

McLaughlin pitched seven innings, allowing nine hits and recorded four strikeouts without issuing a walk. Greene's two RBI double in the second highlighted a three-run inning as the Vikings jumped on top 3-0. The Vikings sent 10 men to the plate in the fifth as part of a seven-run inning. Two singles and a walk brought home the first run on a hit-by-pitch. A sacrifice fly by Madoc Fisher (Wayne, N.J.) brought home the second run. An error and fielder's choice made the score 10-0 before Kyle O'Connor (Lynn, Mass.) plated the seventh run with an RBI single.   

Owls' starter Vincenzo Camera lasted 4.1 innings, giving up seven runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts. Westfield State used five pitchers on the afternoon. 

The Owls broke the shutout in the bottom of the fifth when Nick Martin hit a one-out single.  

Salem State widened the margin with five more runs in the seventh as five consecutive walks scored two runs and Fisher added his second RBI of the game with another sacrifice fly. Greene's two-run single made the score 16-1.

Fisher and Greene recored RBI's in the eighth, making the final 18-1.   

Brian Smith (Croton-on-the-Hudson, N.Y.) and Juan Hurtado (Homestead, Fla.) each tossed an inning of scoreless relif. Fisher finished 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
