Falcons Sneak Past Vikings, 2-1

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Salem State field hockey traveled to Fitchburg Massachusetts to take on the Falcons of Fitchburg State University. Despite a strong second half from Salem State, the Falcons were able to sneak away with the 2-1 victory over the Vikings in MASCAC action.

The Falcons struck first after Sophia Yates (Woodstock, Vt.) snuck one past Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.) to give Fitchburg the 1-0 tilt with five minutes to play in the opening stanza. Yates would attempt two more shots before the close of the first quarter, but she was not able to land either to keep it at a one-goal game to head into the second quarter.

A relatively quiet second stanza was highlighted by another Falcon goal to give Fitchburg the 2-0 edge heading into the break.

Coming out of the half it was all Vikings as they were able to secure three penalty corners in a row before Melanie Mason (Beverly, Mass.) recorded her first goal of the season, to cut Fitchburg's lead in half, 2-1. Mosley would make back-to-back saves in the fortieth minute of the game to keep her team within striking distance to enter the final fifteen minutes of play.

Salem found the ball in their offensive end for the duration of the final two minutes of the game, but the Falcons' defensive was able to thwart two penalty corners while their goalie made two saves to solidify the 2-1 victory over the Vikings.
