Field Hockey Collect Conference Triumph Over Vikings

Yates and Narkevicius notch goals for Green and Gold

Fitchburg, Mass. – The Fitchburg State field hockey defeated the Vikings of Salem State, 2-1 this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from Elliot Field.

How It Happened

Fitchburg State took the 1-0 lead at the 10:32 mark of the first period when sophomore Sophia Yates (Woodstock, VT) collected a loose ball at the top of the circle and blasted a shot into the left side of the cage for her first tally on the season.

The Falcons doubled the lead in the 27th minute of play with sophomore Olivia Narkevicius (Phillipston, MA) settled her own rebound in front of the cage and deposited the ball inside the far post for her first score on the season. To make the score 2-0 going into the break.

Following the intermission, Salem State cut the deficit to 2-1 at the 34:02 mark as senior Melanie Mason (Beverly, MA) found the back of the cage for her first goal of the 2023 campaign. The Vikings nearly knotted the score with just over a minute left in the contest when Mason put a shot on target, but Falcon keeper Jenna Morse (Leominster, MA) turned the shot aside, resulting in the 2-1 final.
