SALEM, Mass. – Carolyn Mahoney's first period goal was all Salem State needed as the Vikings went on to shutout New England College 2-0 in an NEHC tilt at Rockett Arena on Friday night. Salem State avenges an earlier 3-2 defeat to the Pilgrims and improves to 4-13-2 on the year and 2-11-2 in conference. New England College is now 4-17-1 and 1-13-1 in the league.
The Vikings jumped on top when Mahoney slipped a loose puck past goalie Hannah Podvey for the game's first score midway thru the first period. Salem State controlled the puck for a majority of the period, outshooting the Pilgrims 11-7. Both goaltenders pitched a shutout in the second period, with the Vikings' Hannah Aveni stopping all 11 shots on goal while Podvey answered with 10 of her own.
Still leading 1-0 in the third, Brenna Greene added an insurance goal for Salem State, her first of the year on a Vikings' power-play to extend the lead to 2-0.
Aveni finished with 32 saves in net, earning her second career shutout and second win against New England College all-time. Podvey stopped 32 shots for the Pilgrims, who edged the Vikings in shots on goal, 35-34.
