ELMIRA, N.Y. – Salem State traveled to face top-10 opponent Elmira in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) matchup at the Murray Athletic Ice Arena on Friday evening. The Soaring Eagles remained unbeaten in conference play (11-0) with a 5-1 victory over the Vikings. Elmira collected their 12th win of the season (12-5) while Salem State slid to 3-9-1 and 1-7-1 in conference.
Despite outshooting Salem State 20-3 in the first period, the Soaring Eagles found themselves tied 0-0 with the visiting Vikings at the end of one. However, Elmira opened the game up in the second period, scoring three times in just over a 10-minute span. Morgan Mordini put the hosts on the board with a goal at the 4:26 mark. Later in the period, Emma Bradbury and Jenny Heath scored back-to-back to goals, giving the Soaring Eagles a 3-0 lead after two. Maddi Morton made it 4-0 early in the third before Katie Manning added Elmira's fifth unanswered goal at the 9:06 mark. Alexis Thomas broke the shutout for Salem State with her second goal of the year with less than three minutes remaining, making the final 5-1.
Alayna Breivogel collected 11 saves in the victory while her counterpart Hannah Aveni made 52 stops for the Vikings.
