Boston, Mass. -- UMass Boston picked up a 4-0 shutout over Salem State in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) contest at Edward T. Barry Ice Rink on Friday evening. The Beacons scored three first period goals to spearhead the victory and improve to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in the NEHC. The Vikings, who are still searching for their first win are 0-3 and 0-2 in conference.
Cailey Kozich, who had two goals and an assist, put UMass Boston up with her first goal at 3:31 of the first. Margeaux Butters made it 2-0 at the 6:50 mark before Emma Webster netted UMass Boston's third unanswered goal of the period. The Beacons held a 14-7 advantage in shots in the first. Neither team scored in the second as UMass Boston increased their shot advantage to 31-14.
Kozich added her second score 9:58 into the third as the Beacons' defense held on for the 4-0 shutout. Victoria Kennedy made 27 saves in the victory while Hannah Aveni stopped 32 shots for Salem State, which was outshot 36-27 for the game.
