Salem State Picks Up Win at New England College

HENNIKER, N.H. – Hannah Aveni made 35 saves and MacKenzie Mallett added a goal and assist as Salem State picked up their second New England Hockey Conference win of the season, defeating New England College 3-1 on Saturday afternoon. The Vikings improve to 4-15 and 2-12 in the NEHC. The Pilgrims lose their fourth straight to go to 3-15-1 on the year and remain winless in the conference at 0-13.  

Salem State rifled off 17 first period shots as the Vikings took a 1-0 lead in the first following a goal by Makayla McGrath less than a minute into the opening period. Cassie Kelly tied the game for New England College at the 4:04 mark of the second before Salem State regained control with back-to-back scores. Mallett and Carolyn Mahoney scored 1:20 apart midway through the second, to give the Vikings a 3-1 lead at the end of two periods.

Aveni stopped all 14 shots in a scoreless third period to earn her second win of the season. Sean D'urso made 41 saves in the loss for the Pilgrims. Salem State ended the game with 44 shots on net compared to 36 for New England College.
