Beacons Top Salem State

BOSTON -- UMass Boston topped Salem State 7-3 in a New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) match on Friday evening at Edward T. Barry Ice Rink. Katie Leffler and Katie Wilbert scored two goals apiece to help the Beacons improve to 7-9 on the season and 6-4 in conference. The Vikings go to 2-13 and 1-10 in the NEHC.

Leading 4-3 heading into the third, UMass Boston scored three goals in a five minute span to win going away. Leffler and Wilbert each notched a goal in the period, sandwiching a score by Allie Reifler. The Beacons outshot Salem State 55-16, including 21-2 in the final period. 

Corin Trejchel opened the scoring for UMass Boston with a first period goal. Abby Stafford answered with the equalizer at 17:23 on a Vikings' power-play. The game remained tied until back-to-back scores by Wilbert and Liz Cramp extended the Beacons' lead to 3-1 in the second. Salem State, however, tied the game as Tea Miles and Brenna Greene found the  back of the net midway through the second. Leffler though quickly regained the lead for UMass Boston with a goal at the 5:50 mark, giving the Beacons a 4-3 lead heading into the third.

Victoria Kennedy made six saves to earn the win in net. Romy Thibeault closed out the game with seven saves in relief in the third. Hannah Aveni took the loss making 37 saves. Dana Smullen stopped 11 shots in just over 10 minutes of action in the third.
