Beacons Notch 5-0 Shutout Over Vikings

SALEM, Mass. - Katie Leffler's (Key Largo, Fla.) goal and assist helped the UMass Boston Beacons shutout the Salem State Vikings 4-0 on Friday night at Richard H. Rockett Arena. UMass Boston improves to 7-6-1 on the season and 5-4 in the New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) while Salem State drops to 2-8-1 and 2-5-1 in the NEHC.

With 6:09 left in the first period, the Vikings lost the puck in the neutral zone. Leffler recovered the puck and shot it into the left side of the net to put the Beacons on top 1-0. UMass Boston outshot the Vikings 9-6 in the first period.

In the second period, Mia Sacco (Plymouth, Mass.) took a shot that Lizzy Saxer (Colorado Springs, Colo.) managed to tip it into the net to make it a 2-0 game for UMass Boston.

1:18 into the third period, Hannah MacDougall (South Dartmouth, Mass.) got ahead of the Vikings' defense and took a close shot to extend the Beacons' lead to 3-0.

Leffler closed the scoring with a shot from inside the blue line as Jenessa Hernandez (Chicago, Ill.) directed the puck in the net, giving UMass Boston a commanding 4-0 lead with 3:36 to go in the third period.   

The Beacons had a slight edge in shots with 25 to the Vikings' 23. Neither team converted on the power play going a combined 0-8.

For the Beacons, goalie Caty Flagg (Methuen, Mass) earned the win finishing with 23 saves.

The Vikings' Sarah Plourde (Hooksett, NH) took the loss and allowed four goals while making 21 saves.
