WENHAM, Mass. – Salem State softball traveled to Wenham, Massachusetts this afternoon to take on crosstown foe, Gordon College, for a non-conference doubleheader. The Fighting Scots stole game one in walk off fashion (3-2) before a five-run sixth inning propelled the Scots to the 6-4 game two victory, putting both teams' season records at 10-22.

Game One

  • The Vikings got on the board in the opening inning when a Samantha Gaona (Billerica, Mass.) single brought home Allison Frost (Auburn, Mass.) for the game's first run.
  • The duo of Gaona and Frost would strike again in the third frame when another hit from Gaona would bring Frost around, making it a 2-0 game in favor of the Vikings. However, in the home half of the third, the Scots would tie the game at two after capitalizing on two fielder's choices and a throwing error.
  • The stalemate would hold until the bottom of the seventh when Liahna Messier (Somersworth, N.H.) singled through the left side to bring home the winning run and solidify the Fighting Scots 3-2 walk off victory.

Game Two

  • After two stolen bases, Frost found herself in scoring position when Gaona grounded out to drive her home, giving the Vikings the early 1-0 lead after one.
  • The Vikings would double their lead in the third frame after Frost crossed the plate for the second time of the game to give Salem the 2-0 edge before the Fighting Scots cut their lead in half in the bottom of the inning after an Ami Rivera (Concord, N.H.) single made it a 2-1 game.
  • An inning later, six Fighting Scots recorded hits to bring around five runs to take the commanding 6-2 lead after six innings.
  • The Vikings looked to rally after Isabella Perrotti (Winthrop, Mass.) and Frost recorded singles to open the seventh, but they would only be able to add a pair of runs before the Scots took the 6-4 victory.

Noteworthy

  • Frost crossed the plate five times on the afternoon while Gaona was responsible for three of the Vikings' five RBIs on the afternoon.
  • Carter is seven strikeouts away from becoming the fourth Viking since 2009 to reach the 200 mark in their career.

The Vikings will return to Alumni Field this Saturday, April 27 to take on Worcester State for a MASCAC doubleheader. Game one is expected to start at noon, followed by game two.
