BOSTON, Mass.- On Wednesday afternoon, Wentworth Institute of Technology (WIT) welcomed Salem State for a doubleheader at Sweeny Field in Boston, Massachusetts. The Leopards needed only six and five innings, respectively, to take the 8-0 and 11-3 sweep on the Vikings. The Leopards boosted their record to 17-13, while the Vikings dropped to 9-17 on the season.

Game One

  • The Leopards struck first after Kyla Igawa (Long Beach, Calif.), delivered a base hit through the right side, resulting in the first run of the game in the opening inning.
  • The next five innings would prove to be a defensive stalemate, with neither team allowing a run before WIT took the game over in the home half of the fifth.
  • The Leopards were able to use four hits and three Viking errors to bring around six runs to take the dominate 7-0 edge before a RBI double from Katie Kranz (Bedford, Mass.) an inning later would end the game in favor of the Leopards (8-0) .

Game Two

  • The Leopards crossed the plate four times in the opening stanza to give them the early lead which they would build an inning later when a triple from Pettenger made it a 5-0 game. Shortly after, Allison Frost (Auburn, Mass.) executed a double play to strand two runners on base and end the inning.
  • The Vikings were able to get on the board in the fourth frame when Paige Souza (New Bedford, Mass.) found her way home after a duo of wild pitches. After Souza crossed the plate, Emily Henning (Grafton, Mass.) launched the ball over the left field fence to clear the bases and cut her team's deficit to two (5-3).
  • However, the Vikings momentum was halted in the home half of the fourth when a Leopard single, double, and triple were responsible for three runs, boosting the WIT to the 7-3 advantage.
  • An inning later, Igawa delivered the game-winning hit as a three-run homer sailed over the left field fence, ending the game, and solidifying the Leopards 11-3 victory.

NOTEWORTHY

  • During the first game, Souza and Dawn Eisnor (Medford, Mass.) recorded the Vikings' two hits of the game.
  • Henning connected on her third homerun of the season in game two's effort.
  • Jess Rowe (Yardley, Pa.) took the win in game two for the Leopards, pitching three complete shutout innings without allowing a hit.
  • Igawa recorded six RBIs in the second game, while going 3-4 in the second game for the Leopards. For the Vikings, Frost, Souza, and Henning each recorded a hit.

The Vikings will return to Alumni Field tomorrow evening for their Pride Game when they take on Lasell University for a non-conference doubleheader. Game times are at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.
