Softball Wraps Up Spring Break Trip

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Salem State softball wrapped up their spring break trip this morning with a 5-1 loss to Augsburg University before falling to Roger Williams University (3-2) to send them back to Salem with a 2-6 record on the young season.

Game One vs. Augsburg University

  • A pair of doubles in the opening inning would give the Auggies an early 3-0 tilt.
  • Augsburg would add to their lead in the third when five hits brough around two runs to make it a 5-0 game in their favor. In the bottom half of the inning the Vikings tried to make some noise after Payton Jeffers (Holly Ridge, N.C.) cranked a double to left field but she would be left on base to close the inning.
  • In the sixth inning the Vikings were able to use aggressive base running and a couple of Auggie errors to notch their first run of the game, however that would be their last as the Auggies went on to take the 5-1 victory.

Game Two vs. Roger Williams University

  • A defensive battle would ensue over the first three innings before the Hawks recorded the first two hits of the game in the home half of the fourth, bringing in just as many runs, to take the 2-0 lead.
  • The Vikings evened the score in the top of the fifth after Allison Thomas (Carver, Mass.) scored on a pass ball before Samantha Gaona (Billerica, Mass.) singled up the middle, bringing home Allison Frost (Auburn, Mass.) for the game tying run.
  • The Hawks reclaimed the lead in the sixth after a fielder's choice brought a run around and would then go on to hold the Vikings hitless in the top of the seventh to take the 3-2 victory on the afternoon.

Noteworthy

  • Jeffers' double in the opening game was the first of the senior's season.
  • Emily Carter (Warwick, R.I.) recorded a season-high in strikeouts with four in her five innings pitched against the Hawks.
  • The Vikings will return home and have a week to regroup before welcoming the Buccaneers from Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Friday March 22 for their home opener against a conference foe. Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. followed by game two at 6 p.m..
