Vikings Fall on Road in Conference Opener

PORTLAND, Maine – Salem State field hockey looked to get their first MASCAC win on the road tonight, as they traveled to Portland, Maine to take on the Huskies of the University of Southern Maine. A fourth quarter goal from Mikayla Mason (Beverly, Mass.) gave Salem life in the final eight minutes of play, but it would be too little too late as the Huskies went on to take the 3-1 victory and drop the Vikings to 0-1 in conference play.

The first stanza was all Huskies, as they were able to get off two shots and four penalty corners before Dylan Barr (Phippsburg, Maine) notched the first goal of the game in the eleventh minute to give the home team the 1-0 tilt. The one-goal advantage would stand over the final four minutes to send the game into the second quarter with the Huskies holding the slight edge.

A majority of second quarter action would take place at midfield as only one shot was attempted in the opening eleven minutes before Viking's goalie, Izzy Mosley (Middleborough, Mass.), turned away two shots on goal to close out the half and deny the Huskies attempt to build on their lead.

Two minutes into the second half, Southern Maine built on their lead after Sage Drinkwater (Steep Falls, Maine) netted a pass from Mary Keef (Westbrook, Maine) to give their team the two-goal cushion. Four minutes later, Ashley Yebba (Everett, Mass.) tried to get on the board for Salem, but her attempt was swatted by the Huskies' goalie. Southern Maine kept the pressure on the Vikings' defense, but Mosley saved five Husky shots to send the game into the final fifteen minutes with the home team still holding a two-goal advantage.

The Huskies added another tally to their total before the Vikings got on the board eight minutes into the fourth after Mason snuck one past the Huskies goalie to bring her team back within two goals (3-1). The Vikings' offense kept the pressure on for the remainder of the game as they fired off seven shots, in just as many minutes, but Eleanor Folsom (Winthrop, Maine) and her defense remained solid to carry the Huskies to the 3-1 victory over the Vikings.
