Ice Hockey Falls to Salem

SALEM, MA: Fitchburg State ice hockey was defeated by MASCAC opponent Salem State this evening.

THE BASICS:

- Date: 2/1/24

- Score: Salem 6, Fitchburg 4

- Records: Salem (6-14, 6-10 MASCAC), Fitchburg (10-8-2, 9-5-2 MASCAC)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

-  The scoring started on a shorthanded goal 2:57 into the game by Salem's Erik Larsson. The Falcons would answer back just under five minutes later on a Brendan Walk (Clarkston, MI) goal. The Vikings would find the back of the net one more time before the first period concluded. Carson Whitman gave his team the lead back 13:13 in.

- Down 2-1, Fitchburg found another equalizer in the second period 10:54 in, off the stick of Hunter Dunn (Douglas, MA). Salem would respond shortly after the tying goal by the Falcons 12:13 into the period on a Ryan Barrett score. The Vikings would jump out to a two-goal lead just seven seconds later at 12:20 courtesy of a Zach Dill goal. Oliver Cookson (Sheffield, MA)   would slim the deficit down to just one before the period finished, going into the second intermission down 3-4.  

- The third period started again with the Falcons knotting the game up at four all, with Cookson again beating the Viking tender. However, Dill would net his second goal of the game to give the hosting squad the lead back after capitalizing on a power play opportunity. Salem would lock down the victory on an empty netter with 30 seconds remaining. Landyn Greatorex was the beneficiary of the empty net opportunity.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

-  Hunter Thomas (W, 3-3) made 39 saves in the win.

-  Max Macchioni (N. Kingstown, RI) (L, 6-5) made 25 saves in the loss.

-  Shots: Fitchburg 43, Salem 31

- Penalties: Fitchburg 4 minutes on 2 infractions. Salem had 10 minutes on 5 infractions.
