Vikings Split at Western Connecticut Tri-Meet

DANBURY, Conn. -- Salem State won their opening match against Castleton 23-25, 25-21, 25-22, 15-25, 15-13 in a tri-meet match hosted by Western Connecticut at Feldman Arena on Saturday. The Vikings lost their second match of the day to the Colonials 25-11, 25-9, 25-9 to go to 2-11 on the season.

Genevieve Kempster (Hopedale, Mass.) and Abigail O'Connor (Gilford, N.H.) led the way in the win over the Spartans, combining for 18 kills with Kempster adding 15 digs and four aces. Eva Haralabatos (Melrose, Mass.) chipped in with 26 assists and 20 digs while Pamela Diaz (Lynn, Mass.) added a game-high 27 assists. Danielle Sheehan (Walpole, Mass.) came through with five kills and 16 digs.

Salem State tied the match with a 25-21 set two win. The Vikings jumped out to an 11-4 lead following a service ace by Dawn Eisnor (Medford, Mass.). Salem State took advantage of eight errors and a 0.44 hitting percentage by Castleton to move in front 22-13. Two more errors and a kill by Miranda Quinlan (Billerica, Mass.) gave the win to Salem State.

The Vikings held on in a back-and-forth set three where the largest lead was 11-4 early on following another ace by Eisnor. Trailing 22-13, Castleton fought back to draw within two points at 22-20. However, two attack errors and a kill by Quinlan gave the set to the Vikings.

The Spartans won the fourth set, setting up a closely played fifth and deciding set. Poor hitting by Castleton allowed Salem State to take a 12-9 lead. Castleton drew to a point at 14-13, but a service error gave the set and match to the Vikings.

Diaz led Salem State with seven digs in the loss to Western Connecticut. Kempster had four kills and Haralabatos four assists.

Western Connecticut racked up 44 kills while hitting .510 over the final two sets to sweep the Vikings. Following a 25-11 win in set one, the Colonials opened up a 14-7 lead in set two before finishing the set on an 11-2 run. Western Connecticut kept the momentum in set three by opening up a 10-0 lead. A kill by Quinlan broke the streak, but the Colonials built an insurmountable 20-6 lead before settling for a 25-9 victory.
