Salem State Defeats Western Connecticut 5-4

DANBURY, Conn. -- Salem State picked up their first win of the season 5-4 over Western Connecticut in a Little East tennis match held at the Westside Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. The win raises the Vikings' record to 1-5 and 1-1 in conference. The Colonials slide to 1-6 and 1-2 in the Little East.

Anastasia Startseva (Volksburg, Russia) moved to 6-0 on the season at first singles as she beat  Melanie Grasso (New Fairfield, Conn.) 6-1, 6-0. Alexandria Floyd (Burlington, Mass.) earned a 6-3, 6-1 victory at second singles over Sarah Cipriano (Watertown, Conn.).

Abbie Laliberte (Gardner, Mass.) and Cassie Liu (Guangzhou, China) each picked up their first singles wins of the year, helping Salem State take 4-of-6 singles matches to secure the win. Laliberte won 6-3, 6-3 over Maria Madden (Rhinebeck, N.Y.)  at fourth singles while Liu swept Brooke Stillman (Brookfield, Conn.) 6-0, 6-0 at sixth singles.

Startseva / Floyd picked up the lone doubles point for Salem State, blanking Grasso / Diana Rebelo (Naugatuck, Conn.) 8-0.
