SALEM, Mass. -- Ray Kizzie will take over the helm of the Salem State women's ice hockey team in 2023-24, after spending the last two seasons with Team Maryland in the Eastern Hockey League (EHL). Kizzie talked about what this new journey means to him. "It's an honor and privilege. I'm very grateful for the opportunity and excited to join the community at Salem State."

Salem State is ranked number nine in this year's New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) pre-season poll and are working hard to prove that they have been overlooked. The Vikings have a trio of new leaders this season, led by senior captain forward Deanna Bosco, alternative captain's grad-student forward Jessica Robert, and alternative captain defenseman junior Téa Miles .

Bosco last season played in 24 games for the Vikings. Robert played 25 games and scored six goals with three assists while Miles played in 21 games last season, recording three assists.

The captains talked about the expectations for this season. "As a team, we always have our team expectations and core values. Together, a big expectation this year is to come and work as a team. We are focusing on proving to ourselves and everyone that we are here to make a statement. The little details are what make a difference and having everyone come together as a team."

They talked about the goals that they have set this season other than the ultimate goal, which is winning the NEHC title. "There are a lot of expectations we have as a team, but the biggest goal is working together as one to reach those goals."

They mentioned some of the things they have been impressed with in the pre-season that they hope will carry on to the season. "Pre-season and now coming into the season there is a lot to learn, but we have come together as a team really fast. We are able to support one another and have our goals, so having those expectations in the pre-season will stay with us throughout."

The trio mentioned the freshmen and transfers that will hopefully make an impact for Salem State. "We have a bigger incoming class of freshman and transfer students, so there is a lot to look forward to because everyone brings a different perspective. There is a lot of potential to what each player brings."

"We are all so excited and ready to get out there, showing ourselves and everyone who Salem State women's ice hockey really is."

Salem State will open the 2023-24 season this Friday night when they face Nichols. Game time is at 6:00 p.m.
