Q&A With Sr. Hannah Aveni '24 - Business Marketing

Vikings' women's ice hockey goalie Hannah Aveni of Melrose was named New England Hockey Conference (NEHC) Goalie of the Week on Monday after posting a 2-0 record last week. She allowed just one goal while registering a .982 save percentage.

What were your emotions when you learned you won the award?

"It was definitely a surreal experience. It never happened before, so it was exciting to see obviously I couldn't have done it without my defense and my forwards in front of me. It's not just all about me," she said.

What kind support do you receive from your family and friends?

"They are extremely supportive. My parents come to almost every game when I am playing and my dad started supporting me when I started skating at four. I also have a wonderful group of teammates. They are extremely supportive with helping me become a better player, which is awesome," she said.

When did you start playing hockey?

I started to play when I was really young. My brother played and he wanted to shoot some pucks on me so he dressed me in goalie gear and started ripping them up in my face and it  went from there. I played through middle school and high school and now in college," she said.

How difficult is to be a student-athlete playing a sport and maintaining good academic grades?

"It's a definitely a mental battle, you have to manage your time the right way. You really have to be focused on what you need to do to make yourself better academically and as an athlete, It's definitely a struggle sometimes, but it's all worth it at the end because you are playing a game that you love too."

Once Aveni finishes playing for the Vikings she would love to continue her playing career. She added she would like to play in the Europe Women's Hockey League (EWHL) after she graduates this spring.
