Rams Spoil Vikings' Senior Night

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State women's basketball welcomed Framingham State University to Twohig Gymnasium tonight as they wrapped up their regular season and celebrated seniors Liz Zaiter and Alyssa Genness. Unfortunately, the Rams spoiled the Vikings senior night as they took home the decisive 91-62 victory over the Vikings.

Kylie Gates (Pembroke, Mass.) led the Vikings with 16 points, six helpers, and three rebounds while Abuk Teng (Manchester, N.H.) netted 16 of her own in the effort.

Katty Haidul (Gilford, N.H) and Flannery O'Connor (Amesbury, Mass.) each recorded a double- double for the Rams with Haidul netting a game high 22 points and 13 rebounds and O'Connor adding 15 points and 11 rebounds of her own in the victory.

How it Happened:

  •  Despite striking first, the Vikings found themselves down by a tally of seven (9-2) with under five minutes to play in the opening stanza. Salem was able to hold Framingham to only four points in the final four minutes while adding on eight of their own to find themselves within three points (13-10) of the Rams.
  • The Rams opened the second with eight unanswered points before a tough layup from Teng stopped the bleeding and bought the score to 18-12 in favor of Framingham. Halfway through the second, the Rams were able to extend their lead to double-digits, but it would only last one possession as a Jaylen Nieves' (Chicopee, Mass.) three brought the home team back within seven (24-17).
  • Salem found themselves in another deficit with 1:42 to play in the half after a Haidul layup lifted her team up by a tally of 11 (32-21). When it looked like the Rams would carry the double- digit lead into the half, Lamia Ashley took it coast-to-coast to make the score 32-23 at the break.
  • Three minutes into the second half, the Rams found themselves ahead by 16 points after opening on a 9-2 run to bring the score to 41-25 in their favor and force the Vikings hand at a timeout.
  • Following the timeout, Gates was able to notch two at the free throw line before the Rams went on a run to give them their largest lead of the game at 20 points (47-27). As the clock read 3:20, Genness sunk a three to bring her team within 18 points, but the Rams would keep the Vikings at bay as they entered into the final ten minutes of play with the commanding 65-40 lead.
  • Framingham's 33-point third quarter put the Vikings in too deep of a hole which allowed the Rams to cruise to the 91-62 victory over the Vikings.
