Vikings Fall to Rams on the Road

BOSTON, Mass. – Salem State women's basketball wrapped up their road stint tonight as they traveled down to Boston to take on the Rams of Suffolk University. An efficient shooting night from behind the arc put the Rams in route to the 71-54 victory over Salem State, dropping the Vikings to 0-3 on the young season. The Vikings look to notch their first win of the season this Thursday as they welcome Johnson & Wales University to Twohig Gymnasium for their home- opener.

Irianis Delgado (Lynn, Mass.) was a bright spot for the Vikings this evening, recording 24 points, seven rebounds, and three steals. Kylie Gates (Pembroke, Mass.) and Liz Zaiter (Peabody, Mass.) each added nine points of their own, with Gates also dishing out four assists in the loss.

The Rams were spearheaded by Amanda DeAngelis' (Londonderry, N.H.) double-double of 20 points and 13 rebounds. Teammate, Colby Guinta (Manchester, N.H.) added 15 points in the Rams' victory.

After trading baskets to start the first quarter, the Rams were able to distance themselves behind the play of Guinta, who scored seven points in the final two minutes to give her team the 27-14 advantage going into the second quarter.

The Vikings tried to cut into the Rams lead when Delgado made a defensive stop that resulted in two for herself on the other end, but back-to-back three pointers from Mia Fantauzzi (Londonderry, N.H.) gave Suffolk their largest lead so far and brought the score to 32-18 in their favor. With one minute to play in the half Delgado added two more to her total but a last second foul gave the Rams a free basket, bringing the score to 40-23 at the half.

The Rams built on their lead throughout the third, leading by as many as 22 points and holding the Vikings to only 13 points, seven of which coming from the charity stripe, putting the score at 56- 36 heading into the final stanza.

The Vikings outscored the Rams 18-15 in the final ten minutes of play, behind Delgado's aggressive play resulting in eight fourth quarter points for the senior. Unfortunately, the effort was too little, too late as the Rams went on to take the commanding 71-54 victory.
