SALEM, Mass.- Emily Carter (Warwick, R.I.)  led the Vikings to a shutout victory as #4 Salem State defeated #5 Bridgewater State 5-0 in the first round of the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) tournament on Thursday evening at Alumni Field. The Vikings improved to 14-24 while the Bears finished their season with a 19-20 record.

How It Happen

  • The Vikings started the game with three straight bunts to load the bases, however back-to-back strike outs would halt their momentum before Mackenzie DeSantis' (Ridge, N.Y.) discipline at the plate brought the games' first run around.
  • An inning later the Vikings added to their lead as singles from Isabella Perrotti (Winthrop, Mass.) and Samantha Gaona (Billerica, Mass.)  would bring four of the Vikings' five runs home to give them the 6-0 lead after two.
  •  A base hit from Alaina Giuliano (Malden, Mass.) would bring Allison Frost (Auburn, Mass.) home in the third inning before Frost singled to right field to give the Vikings the commanding 8-0 lead after four.
  • The Vikings would allow one hit in the top of the fifth before stranding the runner on base to take the 8-0 victory after five innings.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Carter recorded the win pitching five innings without allowing a run.
  • Giuliano went 3 for 3 with one RBI while the trio of Perrotti, Gaona and Frost recorded two hits apiece.
  • The duo of Makayla Ansell (Menifee, CA.)  and Sydney Schaefer (Chelmsford, Mass.) recorded a hit on the effort for the Bears.

Salem State will travel to Westfield State tomorrow, May 10 to take on the top-seeded Owls in the MASCAC Quarterfinals. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m..
