SALEM, Mass.- Salem State softball hosted Lesley University on Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field. Emily Carter (Warwick, R.I.) pitched a complete game, allowing only three hits in the Vikings' 2-0 victory over the Lynx, improving them to 11-24 on the season. The teams were set to play a second game but would only get as far as the second inning before the game was called due to weather.

How it Happened

  • Discipline at the plate for the Vikings would put two runners on before a pass ball and wild pitch would eventually allow Samantha Gaona (Billerica, Mass.) to cross the plate for the first run of the game.
  • The Vikings doubled their lead in the home half of the sixth as Mackenzie DeSantis (Ridge, N.Y.) used a pass ball and wild pitch to find her way to third base before Isabelle Besser (Scituate, R.I.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing DeSantis home to give the Vikings the 2-0 tilt.
  • The Vikings defense would then hold the Lynx hitless in the seventh frame to take the 2-0 victory.

NOTEWORTHY

  • Carter struck out six batters on the afternoon, which put her career total at 201 to make her the fourth softball pitcher since 2009 to surpass the 200 milestone.
  • Gaona recorded a multi-hit game while the trio of Alaina Giuliano (Malden, Mass.), Allison Frost (Auburn, Mass.) and DeSantis each recorded a hit. For the Lynx the trio of Isabella Moscoso (El Cojon, CA.), Kari Sorensen (Thousand Oaks, Ct) and Madison Herbert (Milford, N.H.) each recorded a hit.
  • Game two would see two rain delays over the first inning and a half before the game was called due to weather.

The Vikings are back at home this Saturday, May 4th when they plan to celebrate senior day in their regular season finale against the Trailblazers of MCLA. The first game is scheduled for 11 a.m. followed by game two.
