Owls Soar Past Vikings on Senior Day

SALEM, Mass. – Salem State softball welcomed the Owls of Westfield State for their final Saturday doubleheader in Salem, where they also celebrated their three seniors: Hannah Magee, Isabella Perrotti, and Rebecca Walker. After two extra innings, the Owls snuck away with the 3-2 victory in game one before taking the second game by a score of 5-4 to sweep the Vikings on senior day.

GAME 1:

  • Jordyn Lummus (Pittsfield, Mass.) opened the game with a double to center field and would eventually find her way home for the first run of the game. The 1-0 tilt would not last long as the Vikings would even the score when Rebecca Walker (Lynn, Mass.) crossed the plate after notching a single earlier in the inning.
  • The next four innings would be a pitcher's battle with Emily Carter (Warwick, R.I.) striking out four batters to aid her team in holding the Owls at one run.
  • The Vikings reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth after Sydney Rodriguez (Brighton, Colo.) sent one to right field to bring Walker home and take the 2-1 edge.
  • The Vikings had a chance to build on their lead in the sixth as they found themselves with no outs and the bases loaded, but the Owls' defense hunkered down and recorded three outs in a row to stay within striking distance to enter the seventh inning.
  • Janna Jose (Middlefield, Conn.) singled and found herself on third base after errors on Salem's behalf, which also brought a runner around to tie the game at two to head into the home half of the seventh where they would leave one Viking on base to force extra innings.
  • Isabella Perrotti (Winthrop, Mass.) remained solid in left field as she retired two of the three Owl batters herself to keep the game at a two-run stalemate entering the bottom of the eighth, which would eventually hold and bring the game to the ninth inning.
  • The Owls took their first lead of the game in the top of the ninth after they capitalized on a fielding error which would remain through the bottom of the ninth, allowing the Owls to take the 3-2 victory in extra innings.

GAME 2:

  • The Owls found themselves with the 2-0 advantage in the top of the second, but the Vikings would even the tally an inning later when Payton Jeffers notched a 2-RBI double.
  • The game would remain at a 2-2 stalemate until the sixth inning when Lummus launched a ball to center field to bring two runs around and reclaim the lead for her team. Later in the inning, Lummus would cross the plate herself to give Westfield the 5-2 advantage.
  • Westfield held the Vikings to one hit and two runs in the final two innings to secure the 5-4 win over Salem.
