Softball Notches First Conference Victory in Doubleheader Split

SALEM, Mass. – This afternoon, Salem State softball welcomed the Bears of Bridgewater State University for a doubleheader. The Vikings notched their first MASCAC victory of the season this afternoon when they took the first game by a score of 3-1 before the Bears' avenged them in the second game, 8-1 , to split on the afternoon.

Game 1

  • The Vikings were able to use mistakes on the Bears' part to notch the first run of the game to take the early 1-0 advantage in the opening inning.
  • A pitchers' duel ensued over the next two innings before Amelia Blake (Raynham, Mass.) singled to bring a Bear home and tie the game at one to head into the fifth inning.
  • In the bottom of the fifth, Rebecca Walker (Lynn, Mass.) notched her second hit of the game, which also brought Allison Frost (Auburn, Mass.) home for what would be the game-winning run. Walker would tack on one more run to take the 3-1 heading into the final two innings.
  • Emily Carter (Warwick, R.I.) would halt the Bears' rally when she struck out the final batter swinging to secure the final out and the 3-1 victory for the Vikings.

Game 2

  • The Bears wasted no time avenging their game one loss, as they notched three hits in both the first and third inning to bring around four runs to take the early 4-0 lead.
  • Payton Jeffers (Holly Ridge, N.C.) started the fourth inning off with a single down the right field line before she crossed the plate later in the inning to notch the Vikings' first run of the game (4-1).
  • The Bears would add four more runs in the top of the seventh to put Salem in a seven-run deficit, which proved to be too much as the Bears went on to take the 8-1 victory in game two.
