Lyons Blank Vikings 3-0

NORTON, Mass. – Wheaton scored a pair of second half goals while limting Salem State to just four shots on goal as the Lyons cruised to a 3-0 win over the Vikings on Wednesday afternoon at Keefe Field. The Lyons improve to 10-4 on the season, while the Vikings fall to 9-6.

The Lyons cracked the scoring column just 154 seconds into the match when senior defender Nick Vanini (Londonderry, N.H.) found junior midfielder Ewan Noble (Newport, R.I.) for the first tally of the contest. Noble made a run behind the back line and ended up putting the ball in the back of the net for his second goal of the year and a 1-0 Wheaton edge.

The half remained scoreless for the next 42-plus minutes as the home team took a 1-0 lead into the midway point.

Wheaton scored twice more in less than 10 minutes to take a 3-0 second half lead. First year Alasdair Ferrier (Concord, N.H.) made a bid for a goal, but junior goalie Matt Hauntsman (Milford, N.H.) stopped the shot for Salem State. Junior midfielder Jack Brusso (Pawtucket, R.I.) collected the rebound and scored his second marker of the year in the 63rd minute for a 2-0 margin. The Lyons final goal came in the 73rd minute when sophomore midfielder Gavin Mahoney (Carlsbad, Calif.) found senior forward Alex Nickerson (York, Maine) for a shot that deflected off a defender and into the back of the net for his second tally of the season. The assist was the first collegiate point for Mahoney.

Wheaton senior keeper Diego Medina (Yonkers, N.Y.) earned every bit of his 12th career shutout when he denied the Vikings' best chance to get on the board. Senior midfielder Joao DeSouza (Lowell, Mass.) attempted a penalty kick, but Medina turned it back for one of four saves. Hauntsman finished with five stops for Salem State.
