Mass Maritime Defeats Vikings In Home Finale
SALEM, Mass. -- Mitchell Maida notched five goals and an assist and Jack Iversen added a pair of goals and had six assists as Mass Maritime defeated Salem State, 24-4 in the home finale for the Vikings on Tuesday night. The Buccaneers up their record to 7-6 and 4-3 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) while Salem State ends their campaign 1-15 and 0-7 in conference.
Salem State honored seniors Aristomenis Koumentakos and Cole Hay, who played in their final home game on Tuesday evening.
Daniel Kane and Braeden Kosiewicz gave Mass Maritime an early 2-0 lead in the first before Erik Magner answered for the Vikings at the 10:47 mark. However, the Buccaneers ended the opening period with four unanswered scores, including two by Maida to exit the first leading 6-1. Lake Fleming opened the second period with a goal for Salem State, but back-to-back goals by Iversen and Gage Coolahan increased the lead to 8-2. Aidan Hollingsworth cut the deficit to 8-3, but once again the Buccaneers closed the period on a 4-0 run with Maida scoring twice, giving him five goals at the break. Mass Maritime held a 60-10 shot advantage at halftime.
The Buccaneers held Salem State scoreless in the third, while tallying nine goals by nine different scorers to build a 21-3 advantage. Ryan Cameron, who had three goals after halftime netted two to open the fourth as the Buccaneers unanswered goal streak reached 16 following another score by Nick Leander with 6:30 remaining.
Lake Fleming capped the scoring for the Vikings with a goal at 1:51 of the fourth, making the final 24-4.
John Aidonidis started the game in goal for Mass Maritime and recorded two saves as the Buccaneers used four netminders in the game.Trevor Gilligan made 31 saves for the Viking s in the loss.
