Huskies Prevail 25-12 Over Vikings

SALEM, Mass. – Nick James (Portland, Maine) scored eight goals and added five assists and Schuyler Wetmore (Cumberland Center, Maine) added seven scores and three assists as Southern Maine defeated Salem State 25-12 in a Little East Conference match on Wednesday at Alumni Field. The Huskies win their first LEC game of the season (1-4) and improve to 3-7 on the season. The Vikings remain winless in the conference (0-5) and slip to 6-7 overall.

Tucker Nussinow (Portland, Maine) – 3 goals, Andrew James (Portland, Maine) – 2 goals, 1 assist, Aidan Mitchell (Brunswick, Maine) - 2 goals, Benjamin Hines (York, Maine) – 2 goals all scored for Southern Maine.

Sam Cioffi (Marblehead, Mass.) led Salem State's offense with four goals and an assist. Patrick Guinee (Gloucester, Mass.) – 3 goals, 1 assist, Drew Worthley (Saugus, Mass.) – 2 goals, 1 assist, Lake Fleming (Gloucester, Mass.) – 2 goals, Kevin Albert (Canton, Mass.) – 1 goal, 2 assists were the goals scorers for Salem State. 

Southern Maine built a 6-2 first quarter lead as James and Wetmore combined for five scores in the opening period. Guinee netted a goal early in the second, but four unanswered scores by the Huskies gave Southern Maine a 10-3 advantage with 5:15 left in the period. Cioffi and Worthley sandwiched goals around another score from James, making the score 11-5 in favor of Southern Maine at the half.

Trailing 13-6 in the third, Salem State scored three straight goals, including two by Guinee to pull within four. Later, James and Fleming exchanged scores as the Vikings exited the quarter behind 14-10.

Southern Maine broke the game open in the fourth, outscoring Salem State 11-2 in the final period. Wetmore, James and Hines all had multiple goals for the Huskies in the period.

Nathan Plourde (Otisfield, Maine) earned the win making five saves while Braeden Logue (Hampton, N.H.) saw time in net and was credited with seven saves.  Zach Royal (Abington, Mass.) stopped 18 shots for Salem State. The Huskies held a 60-33 advantage in shots.
