Castleton Tops Salem State 24-16

Castleton, Vt. -- Casey Meczywor and Sean Kimura combined for 10 goals and four assists as Castleton defeated Salem State 24-16 at Dave Wolk Stadium in a Little East Conference match on Saturday afternoon. The Spartans improve to 1-9 and are now 1-1 in conference. The Vikings even their record at 5-5 and go to 0-3 in the Little East.

Lake Fleming and Kevin Albert tallied four goals apiece for Salem State. Patrick Guinee and Sam Cioffi each notched three goals while Sam Cioffi and Drew Worthley rounded out the scoring with two goals apiece for the Vikings. Guinee and Albert also had three assists while Kyle Tammaro had five caused turnovers.

Castleton built a 5-1 lead early in the first quarter behind a pair of goals from Kimura and Hunter Sarro. Two scores from Fleming closed the lead to 5-3 before Meczywor netted a man-up goal for the Spartans. Albert closed the period with a goal, cutting the deficit to 6-4. Guinee scored to open the second, but Castleton responded with seven unanswered goas to take a 13-5 lead. Worthley got one back for the Vikings in the final minute as the Spartans held a 13-6 halftime advantage.

The two teams combined for 15 goals in the third period. Albert topped Salem State with three third period goals while Fleming added a pair of scores. Kimura contributed three scores for the Spartans, who held a 22-12 lead at the end of three.

The Vikings outscored Castleton 4-2 in the final period as four different players found the back of the net for Salem State.

Zac Smith earned the win in net, stopping one shot for Castleton. Chris Wilk played the final three quarters in goal for the Spartans, stopping 13 shots. Zach Royal made 19 saves for Salem State.

Castleton produced 77 shots to the Vikings' 44 attempts.
