Vikings Overwhelm Hornets 22-5

SALEM, Mass. -- Patrick Guinee (Gloucester, Mass.) scored six goals and added two assists while Sam Cioffi (Marblehead, Mass.) and Drew Worthley (Saugus, Mass.) combined for 10 goals and a pair of assists in Salem State's 22-5 win over Northern Vermont-Lyndon on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field. The Vikings move to 2-1 on the year. The Hornets open their season 0-1. Salem State set a school-record with 70 shot attempts in the contest and tied the school mark for most goals in a game with 22.

Lake Fleming (Gloucester, Mass.) – 2 goals, Kevin Albert (Canton, Mass.) – 2 goals, Christian Burke (Danvers, Mass.) – 1 goal, Aidan Hollingsworth (Methuen, Mass.) – 1 goal, all netted scores for Salem State.

Anthony Townsend (Pembroke, Mass.) – 2 goals, Benjamin Cheever (Johnson, Vt.) – 3 goals, accounted for all five of Northern Vermont-Lyndon'sscores.

Guinee opened the game with Salem State's first goal and was followed by three consecutive scores by Worthley, with the third goal coming at the 10:06 mark of the first quarter. The Hornets countered with back-to-back goals by Townsend and Cheever, but the Vikings tallied two more scores to take a 6-2 lead into the second.

The Vikings outscored Northern Vermont-Lyndon 9-1 in the second to take a comfortable 15-3 lead into the half. Guinee accounted for three of the goals as part of an 11-0 run by the Vikings dating back to the first quarter. Cheever broke the string for the Hornets at the 1:53 mark of the period.

Five goals by Salem State in the third made the score 20-4 as Northern Vermont-Lyndon potted one goal in the period by Cheever. Townsend scored to begin the fourth quarter, making it a 20-5 game before Worthley and Guinee closed the game with back-to-back goals for the Vikings.

Zach Royal (Abington,  Mass.) picked up the win in net making seven saves. Aaron Florence (Lutz, Fla.) stopped 30 shots for the Hornets, who were outshot 70-20 for the game.
