Salem State Dominates Wells 21-5

SALEM, Mass. -- Kevin Albert (Canton, Mass.) scored four goals and had a career-high six assists and Lake Fleming (Gloucester, Mass.) and Sam Cioffi (Marblehead, Mass.) each tallied four scores as Salem State routed Wells College 21-5 in their season-opener on Saturday afternoon, giving new head coach Stephen Driscoll his first collegiate win. The Vikings even their record at 1-1 while the Express open the season 0-1.

Patrick Guinee (Gloucester, Mass.), 3 goals, 4 assists, Drew Worthley (Saugus, Mass.), 3 goals, 2 assists, Christian Burke (Danvers, Mass.), 2 goals, Liam Bernardi (Medford, Mass.), 1 goal, all scored for Salem State.  

Quinten Battle (Seneca Falls, N.Y.), 2 goals, Dan Stevens (Williamsville, N.Y.), 2 goals and Dakota Swamp (Green Bay, Wisc.), 1 goal, netted goals for Wells.

Fleming scored twice in the opening period as Salem State scored five unanswered goals in the first. Albert capped a run of night straight goals by Salem State with back-to-back scores in the second before Battle ended the streak for Wells, making the score 9-1 with 9:52 remaining before halftime. Fleming and Albert closed the scoring in the second with their third goals of the game, giving the Vikings a 12-2 halftime lead.

Salem State outscored the Express, 6-3 in the third period with a six different goal scorers finding the back of the net as the Vikings extended their lead to 18-5. Salem State closed the scoring with three goas in the fourth quarter, while holding Wells scoreless in the period and limiting the Express to just three shots on net.

Zach Royal (Abington,  Mass.) picked up his first career win in goal for Salem State, making 12 saves. Jeremy Nuned (Bronx, N.Y.) had 12 saves for Wells.

The Vikings ripped off 64 shots and held a 52-25 advantage in ground balls in the game.
