WORCESTER, Mass. – Goalie Aaron Mercer (Corner Brook, NL) made all 31 saves and Joe Smith (Holbrook, Mass.) converted a second period penalty shot to lead Salem State past Worcester State 1-0 at Fidelity Bank Worcester Ice Center on Thursday evening. The Vikings pick up back-to-back wins to improve to 9-11 on the year and 7-9 in the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC). The Lancers are now 10-12-1 and 7-8-1 in conference.
Smith drew an interference penalty on a drive to the net drawing a penalty, which the senior made for his team-leading 12th goal of the season 2:58 into the second period. Mercer (4-3) made the goal stand up, earning his first career shutout.
The Lancers' Jakub Kubik (Uherske Hradiste, Czech Republic) made 28 saves, allowing just the one goal, but falls to 5-6-1 between the pipes.
Worcester State outshot Salem State 31 to 28. Neither team converted on the power-play, combining to go 0-for-7.
